There is always a hint of magic in the air whenever it snows. This week New England had its’ first snow fall. It was fitting for my trip to Boston on Thursday where I received a sneak peek of the Boston Ballet’s new costumes for Mikko Nissinens’ production of The Nutcracker. I was very excited to get an invite as The Nutcracker is one of my favorite shows to attend around the holidays.

Boston Ballet last introduced new costumes for The Nutcracker seventeen years ago. The latest designs are the vision of award-winning Robert Perdziola. Not only did I get to see the new costumes up close, but I also received a tour of the costume shop where talented craftsmen were at work setting thousands of Swarvoski crystals to Tutu’s, and stitching together the accoutrements of Clara’s fantasy. It was an amazing experience made complete by the privilege of sitting in on a rehearsal of the second act of the play. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to begin the holiday season.

The Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker will run from November 23 – December 30th. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased at www.bostonballet.org.

As a ballerina, The Nutcracker is one of my absolute favorites performances! It also happens to be the ballet that inspired my mom to enroll me in ballet lessons as a child so I have a soft spot for it. I saw it at the SF Ballet two years ago and loved it; would love to see it at the Boston Ballet one day as well. Thanks for the sneak peek of the new costumes! They're beautiful. I'm also a fan of your vintage blazer 🙂

What a fantastic post, thank you for giving us a behind the scenes tour. I grew up in Manhattan and each year my mother would take us to the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. I cherish those moments. Gorgeous.

oh my goodness, i am so in love with this post. the detail of the costumes you guys were able to capture leaves me swoony. i live in chicago and spend a lot of my free time volunteering with the Joffrey Ballet's Young Professionals Board, so dance and ballet (and the Nutcracker!) are very dear to me. I've only had the opportunity to see the Joffrey's costume department once, and it was so special. Thanks for sharing the Boston Ballet's, I can never get enough of gorgeous ballet costumes!

What gorgeous costumes! I love that you posted this, Sarah. I auditioned for the Boston Ballet years ago, but didn't make it. I did live in Boston for a year, though. I love the detail shots as I am currently sewing costumes for a holiday show for the dance company I'm in. Thanks so much for posting these! 😉

Ah! This brings me back to my grade school years- I danced with Boston Ballet when I was younger, and was in the Nutcracker as well. I miss it dearly.
