Penelope the Seal

Penelope the seal was 3-5 days old when she was rescued by Marine Mammals of Maine in May. Determined to be an abandoned pup, she was brought to Mystic Aquarium for rehabilitation. On Wednesday, I was proud to be present at Blue Shutters Beach in Charlestown, RI for Penelope’s release back to the Ocean. The aquarium gave Kiel and I the honors of helping to carry her crate down to the beach. I opened the latch to set her free. It was beautiful, yet bittersweet, to watch Penelope swim away.
I met Penelope at the aquarium in June when I assisted with her feeding and cleaning. At the time she was one of twelve adorable baby seal pups in need of care at Mystic’s rehabilitation clinic. It was incredible to witness first hand the dedication, love, and hard work that the Stranding team puts into rehabilitating the seals. For the twelve baby pups, tube feedings had to occur every couple of hours, from early in the morning until well into the night. Bottle feeding would have been an easier method to feed them, but if a seal is to be released back to the ocean it cannot be given the opportunity to realize that the staff is their food source. Penelope had to demonstrate she could catch her own fish before being released.
My role as the Stranding Ambassador for Mystic Aquarium, has been one of the best things that has happened since starting CGWP. I’m proud to donate and raise awareness to this cause. Thank you for all the help you've given to the Animal Rescue Program and the animals under their care. It was a pleasure to be at Penelope's release and I'm sure you must have felt proud to be the one opening the door to send her back to the ocean. It was the first release I'd been able to attend and I hope to be able to go to more in the future.
