There is nothing quite as relaxing as a day on the beach with a gripping page turner. If you are looking for your next summer beach read, Finding Mrs. Ford, a debut novel by my friend Deborah Goodrich Royce should be at the top of your list.
I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy — the book is available in stores and online today. This debut novel shifts back and forth between the disco days of Detroit 1979 and the summer of 2014 in the idyllic seaside town of Watch Hill (one of my favorite places on earth). At the heart of the story lies the question of who is Mrs. Ford and what happened in the summer of 79′. Mrs. Ford leads a controlled life of privilege until her past catches up with her. The novel centers around the friendship of Susan and Annie — two college girls who couldn’t be more different. Annie is beautiful and reckless, while Susan is perfectly put together and has a plan for life. The two fast friends begin work at a disco run by dangerous men and are caught up in the throes of first love, drugs, and a summer of consequences. The plot propels forward in unexpected ways — connecting the past and present with an ending that I didn’t see coming. If you are seeking a beach read that is impossible to put down, look no further than Finding Mrs. Ford. I was hooked from the very first page.
